“Alliance for regional and civil initiatives (ARCI)” in partnership with the “Agency for European Integration” – Haskovo, Association “Svobodna Syria” and a few more Bulgarian non-governmental associations, launched in December 2012 a Campaign for humanitarian aid to asylum seekers in Bulgaria, as well as in support of refugees from Syria, seeking shelter and protection in refugee camps outside their home country.
We focused our efforts to collect clothes, shoes, blankets, medicines, sanitary - hygienic materials, utensils, books and toys for children, and others. Hundreds of Bulgarian citizens committed to the human tragedy of refugees every day, as responding to calls for help and continue to help with what they can. The campaign was joined by companies that provided medicines and logistical support for the transportation of the collected donations.
Currently, there are about 1,700 people from over 30 nationalities living in 5 centers in Bulgaria, of which nearly 250 are children. In recent months, there was a significant increase in the number of Syrian refugees in our country because of the heavy military conflict in Syria.
According to the United Nations data, the victims of the crisis in Syria reached 90,000 people, while the number of refugees exceeds 1.2 million, and. is expected to increase to 3.5 million people until the end of 2013.
There are a number of international humanitarian channels to aid refugees, but the volume of supply is not enough to take even basic, everyday needs of people. Collected through the campaign donations were allocated according to the needs of the refugees in Bulgaria, as we managed to transport and deliver nearly 50 tons clothing to a refugee camp ATMA on Syrian territory close to the border with Turkey, which housed 18,000 people.
Huge interest that the campaign realized with limited information and media coverage, encourage us to continue with even greater zeal and desire to turn the campaign into a national one for humanitarian aid for refugees. We also want to declare we, the civil society in Bulgaria, have a strong position to stop the violence against the innocent, help with clothing, shoes, food, pharmaceuticals and sanitation supplies to civilians sought protection in refugee camps in the country and in the world.
